Hornets put the STING in 21st Century STEAMM Learning Opportunities
Brown Local Schools is the proud recipient of a 5 year Federal 21st Century Grant. This program supports the creation of Community Learning Centers that provide academic growth and enrichment opportunities during non-school hours. The program helps K-12 students meet state standards in core academic subjects; offers a broad array of enrichment activities that will compliment their regular academic programs; provides hands-on project based learning; and offers educational support services to the families of participating students.
The STEAMM program is offered in support and partnership with North-east Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). STEAMM stands for a focus on: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Medical fields of study. Reading, speaking, writing across the curriculum, communication skills, and presentation skills will be reinforced throughout all components of the program. New technology will be purchased through the grant to enhance the development of technology skills and applications.
While the program offers support with homework in identified areas of need, a structured curriculum addresses a multitude of facets including self-discipline and character building for life skills and college and career readiness through youth development activities and community service in a safe, encouraging, supportive, and positive learning environment.
The program includes special presentations, field trips, community service projects, hand-on engaging learning activities, creative construction and more with a focus on 21st Century Skills (creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication) and the new NEOMED HPAC (Health Professions Affinity Community). See "6-12 Programs" tab for more HPAC information. NEOMED will provide a variety of programs and services along with possible programs from COSI, Camp Invention, Lego Education, Character Counts, and Invention Convention.
This 21st Century learning opportunity is offered FREE of charge to all K-12 Brown Local students; however a registration packet must be completed in order to attend the after school programs. A registration packet may be printed from our "Admissions" tab.
