PRESS RELEASE/ January 17, 2014
The Brown Local 21st Century STEAMM Stingers, student Stinger guests, and their families attended a special assembly on January 16, 2014, for the kick-off of their new Invention Convention Program. K-7th grade students and their parents were inspired by Dr. Claire and Dr. Gadget on how to become inventors and participate in Malvern’s 21st Century inventor’s competition for prizes and a chance to compete at the Ohio regional competition at the Great Lakes Science Center in May.
The Invention Convention Program is run by Just Think, Inc. Just Think Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The organization was started back in 1996 to help promote the program and make it sustainable for future years. Cherylyn Rusthon is the Executive Director of the organization and works with our Board of Directors to help bring the program to local students. Cherylyn's support staff includes a diverse mix of individuals dedicated to the program's mission - providing opportunities to local students.
The Invention Convention was developed with many great and complimentary purposes in mind. One guiding facet was the desire and need to share good and positive news about what is happening in Ohio classrooms. The media reports on the many negative aspects of life - we aim to balance the news with all of the great things children do every day. Celebrating the accomplishments of our children, our schools, and our communities shines light on the good news that is happening all around us. Invention Convention kids do great things and the news of their accomplishments should be front and center everyday.
Another founding tenet for The Invention Convention is the belief that every child is an inventor. If you teach kids to just think, to pay attention, provide them the right environment and tools, and remove the fear of failure, kids can do amazing things. Being genuinely interested in their minds and in their potential, and helping them develop their creativity and problem-solving skills is not only the foundation for invention, but also the foundation for developing critical life-long skills. And the earlier that kids develop these important skills, the better off all of us are.
Everyone at Just Think Inc. and The Invention Convention works to improve the program to meet the changing needs of kids. They have great partners and sponsors who share our vision and allow us to do our job - to provide an invaluable program, to encourage, support, and to listen. They want kids to explore ideas, trust their thoughts, try and try again. A resilient kid who can brainstorm without restrictions, a kid who not only learns, but learns to think, who starts to build these skills is an indicator that we've done our job. For more information on how to donate and become a supporter, or how to become involved in Invention Convention you can visit their website at www.inventionconvention.org or write [email protected].
K-8 STEAMM Stingers will be working on their inventions in their after school program, however the opportunity to create and compete is extended to all interested K-8 Brown Local students. Five supporting after school workshops for all participants are being conducted by Dr. Lynette Angeloni, 21st Century and Gifted Coordinator. Students are asked to register their idea with Dr. Angeloni, and they have the option to complete their invention at home, attend the workshops, or enroll in 21st Century. For more information, contact Dr. Angeloni, 330-863-1355, ext. 258, to register and obtain the required journal. The Invention prototype is due April 4, 2014 and our 1st Annual Invention Convention Showcase and Awards Assembly is April 10, 2014.
On behalf of the Brown Local Schools 21st Century program, we extend a special thank you to the Invention Convention Organization and the tremendous enthusiasm and support from our Malvern staff, students, and parents.
